How do drivers observe the road?
On June 13th, 2017 we present at the 2017 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium in California the results of a study in that Human Factors experts and experienced car drivers modeled the visual attention of drivers performing an overtaking manoeuvre with the HEE. It figured out that by agregating data gained by applying the HEE, the small set of HF experts ended up with highly valid visual attention predictions in just one hour (94% of the variance measured in prior eye-tracking studies could be explained by the reulting prediction model). Interestingly, a set of 20 aggregated drivers without Human Factors expertise and no prior knowledge about the HEE was also able to make fair predictions of the same overtaking sceneario in just one hour. Average individual HF expert and car driver visual attention predictions were worse.
